Out With The Old, In With The New (Balances)

The Nike Air Force 1 has dominated streets, runways, and college parties for over 30 years. From the timeless all-white colorway to the fear-inducing all-black colorway, the Air Force 1 has cemented itself as perhaps Nike’s most iconic and recognizable sneaker. But after all those years of stains, partying, and walking through 8 inches of snow, it might be time to retire those Air Force 1’s. Have no fear however because there’s a new Air Force-esque sneaker on the block: the New Balance 550.

While “new” might not be the right word for most people, the 550 is a welcome sight compared to the seemingly endless wave of Air Force’s that can be seen parading through Walnut park. Originally released back in 1989 and then re-released in 2020, the New Balance 550 has seen a steady rise from an unpopular 80’s basketball sneaker, to an “IYKYK” shoe for sneakerheads, and now to a popular option for frat boys and fashion-conscious twenty-somethings.

The similarities between the Nike Air Force 1 and New Balance 500 are undeniable. Both shoes feature a design language born out of 1980s sportswear. They are both known for their traditional white base, and they both feature blocky soles. Long story short, both sneakers are made for today’s fashion landscape of baggy pants, vintage clothes, and versatile colors.

The rise of the 550 has coincided with the steady growth in popularity of New Balance as a brand. The company was once known as the brand of choice for every dad and grandpa across the country, but now thanks to the ever cyclical nature of fashion, New Balance has emerged as a mainstay of casual, street, and high fashion. While the public perception of New Balance may have changed, the company has continued to largely stick to its roots. Suede-covered chunky sneakers still make up the majority of popular NB models and they still embrace their role as the shoe of choice for every middle American dad.

In all honesty, the New Balance 550 will likely never outsell or be more prominent than the Nike Air Force 1. However, if you’re looking to switch out those not-so-white AF-1’s that smell like sweat and jungle juice, the New Balance 550 may be your best option. Whether it’s the classy white-beige color that’ll match your tote bag or the conveniently titled “Syracuse” option, the 550 is one of the most versatile sneakers available.
